Deaf Actor Mxolisi Nodom Expresses His Appreciation For The Opportunity Scandal Has Given Him
Mxolisi Nodom is without a doubt taking the acting space by storm. The 19-year-old performer has made his acting debut on the e.tv daily drama Scandal! With the character Thando, and has surely won the hearts of many. Thando is Violetta (Cindy Mahlangu)’s deaf brother who comes looking for his dead sister whom she hasn’t heard from for a while.
Mxolisi Nodom, who comes from Kimberly in the Northern Cape was born deaf. Instead of the show casting an actor who knows how to sign, they went for an actual deaf person. Mxolisi has made history as the first ever deaf actor on South African TV shows. Before his push into the spotlight with the Scandal, Mxolisi was involved with Zwakala, an art competition for the deaf.
After learning about Scandal’s auditions, he sent a series of video clips to the showrunners since he was not in Johannesburg at the time. He was then called in for auditions and as they say, the rest was history. Though his talent speaks for itself and he deserves to be on the show, the humble Mxolisi is grateful that he got the opportunity.
The upcoming star thanked everyone who made his dreams a reality, including his parents, the producers and directors of Scandal!, as well as his professional sign language interpreter. “I am grateful for this opportunity @etv_scandal has given me. And not forgetting my amazing parents for their support and love.
To the producers and directors, to @ayandabnzimande_ for being always amazing on set and making my first day amazing. And of course to my interpreter, my feeder and big sister @andi_signs #Thankyou
To all the Deaf scholars, it is possible!!! To the overwhelming love from the Deaf community ,” Mxolosi said.
Many people have taken to social media to approve Scandal! on their latest casting. They include among others Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa, who paid a special tribute to Mxolisi.
