Muzi Mthabela has become a household name in South Africa through Isibaya. He made headlines when he announced he was leaving. His life has had ups and downs that leave his fans inspired and encouraged.

Muzi Mthabela is a South African actor, editor, speaker, and former model. He has appeared in some of the most popular telenovelas of recent memory notwithstanding having a rough patch in his younger days.

He was the editor of the SABC1 drama series Bone of My Bones. Other shows he has worked as an editor on include Zola 7, Zone 14, Jacob’s Cross, City Ses’la, Skwizas, Gaz’lam, Usindiso, Tempy Pushas, Rolling with Zola, Rolling with Kelly and Mina Nawe.

Born in Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal and raised in Clermont and eMandeni, Muzi moved to Johannesburg in 1999 to pursue a career in entertainment. Aside from his role on Isibaya, Muzi has guest featured and returned on numerous television series including Jacob’s Cross, Dream World, The Road, Sokhulu & Partners, Ashes to Ashes, Saints and Sinners, Loxion Lyric and Tempy Pushas.

He also starred in the Lokshin Bioskop film Thug Huis, which first aired on Mzansi Magic on 21 January, 2013. The film is about a gang who conduct a successful robbery, only for mistrust to set in. Also starring in the film are Khanyi Mbau, Lolo Mphephi and Siphiwe Mtshali.

In 2015 he was a celebrity guest trainer on Episode 3 of the Mzansi Magic reality series Bootcamp Mzansi and in November that year he was the featured guest on an episode of the SABC1 interview show Zaziwa.

Muzi landed his first starring role in television in 2017 in the drama series Harvest, about three women who are forced to take over an international drug smuggling business when their husbands are murdered. In it he plays Richard, a mysterious force of destruction who arrives on a mission of revenge.

In 2020 he had a guest starring role in the SABC2 soapie Muvhango as Richard, making his first appearance on Thursday 5 March. In 2020 he joined Imbewu as Menzi Vilakazi.  He has Phunyuka and Phakade looking for skeletons in his closet. Surely he must have stepped on a number of toes but who hasn’t. He developed an addiction to alcohol at a young age in Clermont after falling victim to peer pressure. While in this defiant phase, he eventually went from drinking ciders to gologo (spirits) and smoking.

In March 2010, there was an incident when the South African hip-hop artist known as Molemo Maarohanye (stage name Jub Jub) was drag-racing under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The race resulted in an accident that left four children dead and two with brain damage. He was sentenced to jail for culpable homicide, something that had Mthabela thinking about his own life decisions.

In his own words, he said: “I remember thinking, this could have been me because, at the time, I would drink and drive. The truth is, under the influence, your judgment becomes impaired. I made a lot of mistakes under the influence”.

The journey towards becoming sober was not an immediate success. It was until he got married and had children that he returned to Christianity and gave up drugs entirely. Today, he does not perform in any scenes involving drugs in his acting career, including on Isibaya.

The news came in May 2020 that he was leaving . Reports state that the reason he is leaving the Mzansi Magic telenovela is to pursue other roles, and two main future activities have been brought up thus far. One of them involves joining the cast of e-TV’s popular telenovela Imbewu in a lead role. The other involves playing the legendary Zulu king Shaka Zulu in M-Net’s upcoming epic titled Shaka Illembe. It is expected to be similar to Game of Thrones and be a 12-part series distributed worldwide. Pictures of him in traditional royal Zulu attire that seem to confirm the latter have been posted to his Instagram.
